Waltham – Mrs. Ellen (Roche) Nolan, of Waltham, formerly of Cambridge, died Thursday, July 22, 2010 at her summer home in Marshfield. She was 96.
Ellen was born in Boston on February 18, 1914, a daughter of the late Francis J. and Mary F. (Rowe) Roche. She was raised in Cambridge where she lived before moving to Waltham in 1974. She was a graduate of Cambridge High and Latin School. Until her retirement Ellen worked as a cosmetology instructor at the Robert & Richard School of Hairdressing on Moody Street in Waltham.
She was a longtime parishioner at Saint Charles Borromeo Church in Waltham where she served for years on the annual Bazaar Committee. Ellen was talented in crafting and sewing and was known to be a pretty good card player. She was a voracious reader who frequently worked crossword puzzles and kept up daily with the latest news on the Boston Red Sox.
The wife of the late Thomas J. Nolan, she leaves her daughter, Carol A. Gill of Waltham; her grandchildren, Susan Kronenfeld and her husband, Nathan, of Oakville, Ontario, Michael Gill and his wife, Erika, of Arlington and Sandra Mann and her husband, Gregory, of Upton; her great-grandchildren, Sarah Kronenfeld, Nolan and Connor Mann and Gabriella Gill and many nieces and nephews.
She was also the mother-in-law of the late George J. Gill, sister of the late Francis Roche and Evelyn Ford and aunt of the late John and Thomas Ford.
Family and friends will honor and remember Ellen’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Charles Borromeo Church, 51 Hall Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Cambridge Cemetery.
