Waltham – Miss Emily A. Gardiner, of Waltham, died Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at the Leland Home in Waltham. She was 84. Emily was born, raised and educated in Waltham and was a daughter of the late Augustus G. and Margaret J. (O'Donnell) Gardiner. After high school she served with the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Emily was a graduate of Northeastern University and later earned a masters degree in social work from Boston University. She worked for many years as the director of professional services for the Child Welfare League of America in New York City and later at their re-located offices in Washington, D.C. She retired in 1990 and moved home to Waltham ten years ago. She leaves two sisters, Mary S. Stevens of Westport, Connecticut and Ruth M. Irvin of Two Rivers, Wisconsin; two brothers, Benjamin G. Gardiner and his wife, Hai, of Nashua, New Hampshire and John T. Gardiner of Waltham; her sister-in-law, Mary Gardiner of Waltham and many nieces and nephews. Emily was also a sister of the late Robert F. Gardiner, Helen M. Phillips and William A. Gardiner. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Funeral Services at 10 a.m. Saturday in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham. Rev. Robert F. Hoaglander will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham. Visiting hours will be held prior to the service from 9 to 10 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Leland Home, 21 Newton Street, Waltham, MA 02453.
