Waltham – Mrs. Esther M. (Simpson) Baker, of Waltham, died on Sunday, August 3, 2014 in St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Brighton. She was 84.
Esther was born in Portland, Oregon on October 9, 1929, the daughter of the late Sanford and Frances (Nickelson) Simpson. On November 2, 1948 she married Norman E. Baker, Sr. in Washington while he was serving with the United States Navy. Upon his discharge the pair moved to Portland, Oregon and spent time in New York, Colorado, Florida and finally settled in Massachusetts in 1997.
Esther and her family were devoted to their faith and were very active in their churches. She was a classical pianist and loved to play at weekend services and made sure her children were always involved in the performances.
Besides her husband, Norman E. Baker Sr., she is survived by her children, Christine Cruz of Waltham and Norman E. Baker, Jr., and his wife, Mary Alice, of Kansas; her grandchildren, Luis, Norman, III, Neil, Amy and Stephen; her great-grandchildren, Caleb, Emily, Benjamin, Samantha, Jackson, Timothy, Matthew, Jacob, Damian, Tristan and Alyssa and many nieces and nephews.
She was also the sister of the late Roy L. Simpson.
Family and friends will honor and remember Esther's life by gathering to visit at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 7th in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham where her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
