Etta V. Potter

Waltham – Mrs. Etta Viles Potter of Waltham died Friday, February 24, 2006. She was 86. Born in and lifelong resident of Waltham, a beloved daughter of the late Fred R. and Christena (MacLeod) Viles. She was the beloved wife of the late Benjamin C. Potter. She leaves her three children, Benjamin C. Potter, Jr., and his wife Hannah of Lexington, Lucinda P. Hurley and her husband Brian of Natick, and Sandra P. Herring and her husband Allen of Weston. Devoted grandmother to Julia Potter and her husband David Zenk, Benjamin Potter III and his wife Cyndi, Lynne Harvey and her husband Ken, Christopher Herring, and Travis Herring and his friend Jennifer Bourinot. Devoted great-grandmother to Eliza, Cody, Courtney, William and Stewart. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She is survived by her two sisters, Annabelle V. Leaf and her husband Roy of Venice, Florida, and Elizabeth V. Franc and her husband Sam of Florence, Oregon. She was the sister of the late Frederick Viles II. The Viles Family owned and operated the Prospect Hill Farm on Winter Street, Waltham, MA. Etta was a graduate of Waltham High School Class of 1938 and Burdett College Class of 1941. Etta was a longtime and active member of the First Congregational Church of Waltham where she served as a Deaconess and belonged to the Women’s Association. She volunteered with the Girl Scouts and at the local soup kitchen. Etta was proud to be a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She enjoyed sewing, needlework, knitting, rug making, furniture restoring, puzzles and playing cards with family and friends. Etta was an excellent cook, baker and pie maker. She enjoyed traveling all over the world with her beloved husband, family and friends. In the summertime, she loved the beach and gardening at her cottage in Manomet, MA. She was an exemplary woman to her family and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of her life at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 4, 2006 in the First Congregational Church, 730 Main Street, Waltham. This summer, at a private ceremony, her ashes will be scattered in the ocean and garden in Manomet, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, 33 Myrtle Street, Waltham, MA 02453 or to the Arthritis Foundation, 29 Crafts Street, Suite 450, Newton, MA 02458.
