Evelyn S. Kananovich

Weston – Mrs. Evelyn (Stamas) Kananovich died Saturday, March 30, 2019 at Maplewood at Weston. She was 95.

Evelyn was born in Cambridge on March 20, 1924, a daughter of the late Nicholas and Nicoletta (Kokinakis) Stamas. After graduating from high school during World War II she went to work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she met her husband, Alexander.

On September 5, 1948 Evelyn and Al were married at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Boston. Al's position as an engineer took them to New Jersey and to Chicago before returning to Massachusetts where they made Watertown home for more than fifty years. As a homemaker Evelyn poured her heart and soul into being a great partner to Al and a loving mother to her daughters.

The wife of the late Alexander S. Kananovich, she leaves her children, Susan Kananovich of Watertown and Cynthia K. Bethune (Lawrence) of West Newton; her granddaughters, Brittany and Michaela Bethune; her sister, Thelma Nonis of Waltham and many nieces, nephews and their families.

Evelyn was also a sister of the late Peter, Christopher, Mary, Philip, Louis and Anne Stamas.

Family and friends will honor and remember Evelyn's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday, April 2nd from 4 to 8 p.m. and again on Wednesday morning when her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Newton Cemetery.
