Waltham Dr. Francis C. Callahan, of Waltham, died Friday, May 5, 2006 at Meadow Green Nursing Home, Waltham. He was 87. Born in East Boston, a son of the late John and Mary Jane (Milligan) Callahan, he had lived in Waltham since 1953. He was a graduate of East Boston High School, Tufts University and Tufts University Medical School. Until his retirement, Dr. Callahan was an anesthesiologist at New England Memorial Hospital in Stoneham and at Cambridge City Hospital. During World War II, Dr. Callahan served as a lieutenant with the United States Army from 1942 until 1946. In 1944 he was taken prisoner by the German Army in Italy and eventually escaped with fellow prisoners from a POW camp in Poland in 1945. After the war he attended medical school and established his practice. He was a former member of Nashawtuc Country Club in Concord and the Massachusetts Medical Society. The husband of the late Rita M. (Ehler) Callahan, he leaves his children, Joan E. Callahan and her husband, Thomas Mansfield of Palm Coast, Florida, John J. Callahan of Marlboro, Joyce A. Condon and her husband, Dennis of Alexandria, Virginia, Frank C. Callahan and his wife, Barbara of Woburn and Julie R. Callahan of Waltham; one brother, Robert Callahan and his wife, Jean of Biddeford, Maine; his sister-in-law, Frances Polito of Hyde Park; 10 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late Jane M. McCarthy, father-in-law of the late Patty Callahan and a brother of the late John and Joseph Callahan. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral at 9 a.m. Tuesday from The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham followed by a Funeral Mass in Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
