Francis Hayden "Hank" Fleming, 82
Hank was welcomed back into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 7, 2015. He died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family.
He leaves his loving wife, Diane Fleming and his former wife, Phyllis Fleming both of Millis; his children, Mary Alice Caruso, and her husband, Joseph, of Brunswick, ME; Eileen Perruzzi, and her husband, Stephen, of Millis, Francis Fleming and his partner, Alicia, of Colchester, VT; and Daniel Fleming, and his wife, Karolina, of Jacksonville, FL; his five grandchildren: Jeffrey, Christopher, Nicholas, Robert, and Andrew; and one great grandchild Jayden.
Hank was born to Alice M. and Francis Joseph Fleming on July 7, 1933 in the Berkshire Mountains city of North Adams, Massachusetts. He graduated from Drury High School in 1951, and shortly thereafter answered the call to serve on the U.S.S. Wisconsin as a sailor in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
Upon returning, Hank enrolled in Saint Michael's College in Vermont, where he studied economics under Professor Gianelli, graduating in 1960. Along the way, Hank worked various jobs, including washing pots and pans at Fanny Allen Hospital, tending bar, and selling hot dogs on the 3rd base line at Yankee Stadium (thus his signature greeting: "Shake the hand that shook the hand of Joe DiMaggio!"--later amended to include Mother Teresa!)
After leaving his beloved St. Mike's, Hank settled in the Boston area and taught history and Latin at St. Mary's in Cambridge and Waltham High School. Never one to shy away from a risk, Hank started his own real estate brokerage and sold countless houses in the Waltham area in the early Seventies. Hank's affection for Ireland eventually led him to open the House of Ireland Gift Shop, Fleming World Travel, and Fleming's Restaurant & Pub in Downtown Waltham. He enjoyed reminding people that he owned the only "mall" in Waltham, and that he had visited the Old Country on 49 occasions.
In his later years, Hank returned to his teaching roots, instructing students in Latin Etymology at Our Lady's in Waltham. He also discovered Toastmasters, which provided him much enjoyment throughout his later years.
Hank loved life in general and certain things in particular: Saint Michael's College, the Brooklyn Dodgers, N.Y. Mets, N.Y. Giants, all things Irish, the Latin language, asking questions, and a nice-writing pen. Above all else, Hank loved his family and friends, and for this he will be fondly remembered.
Requiescat In Pace!
Family and friends will honor and remember Hank's life by gathering for calling hours on Sunday, December 13th, from 2-5 pm in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street, (Rte. 20), Waltham, and again on Monday at 10 am before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 am. Interment will be held privately in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
