Frank J. Mooney

September 19, 1935 — December 14, 2018

Winthrop - Mr. Frank J. Mooney III died Friday, December 14, 2018 in Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was 83.

Frank was born on September 19, 1935 in Newton a son of the late Frank J. Jr. and Grace Mabel (Carmichael) Mooney. Raised and educated in Waltham he was a graduate of Waltham High School with the class of 1953 and then earned his Bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College in 1957. He married Waltham native Helen C. Malafey on June 9, 1962 and they made Waltham their home until moving full-time time to their home in North Kingstown, Rhode Island in 1995. They welcomed the transition to the Masonic Overlook Retirement Community in Charlton in 2013 where they easily adapted to its environment and the wonderful friendships they developed.

Frank went to work in his family's business, Lundey Sales on Main Street (later Crescent St) in Waltham after serving two years in the Army in 1957-1959. Lundey specialized in fasteners and tools for metal building fabrication as well as distributing tools for the commercial building trade. He served as President of the company from 1975 until its sale in 1995.

Frank was active in Waltham Rotary Club where he served as President in 1973. He was a longtime member of Waltham Masonic Triad Lodge A.F. & A.M. and the Scottish Rite.

Outside of work, Frank enjoyed lots of family time outside of Waltham. Lots of time was spent at the family beach home in the 'Old Buttonwoods' section of Warwick, Rhode Island. The beach house was home for tennis, yard games, fishing and lots of time digging clams and quahogs from his beloved East Greenwich Bay. Several camping trips each summer traversed all of New England and much of the east coast. Frank was an avid fisherman, both salt and fresh water, and enjoyed all things outdoors.

After retiring, Frank and Helen expanded their travel and took a trip across country in their recreational vehicle and later maintained a seasonal camp at Country Aire Campground in Charlemont, Massachusetts to be close to their grandchildren. Spring and summers included frequent trips to Charlemont to enjoy their grandsons' athletic pursuits, a couple of whitewater rafting trips, fishing and relaxing with friends. Loyal to all the New England sports teams Frank had a particular affection for the Boston Celtics. Frank enjoyed music in all forms and genres, especially country and enjoyed singing and writing music as well.

In addition to his wife of 56 years, Helen he leaves their children, Frank J. Mooney IV (Jennifer) of Charlemont, MA and Kristin T. Mooney of Winthrop; he was especially proud of his grandsons, Ryan (student at the University of Vermont, member of the Alpine Ski Team) and Zachary Mooney (student at Dickinson College, member of the Football Team).

Family and friends will honor and remember Frank's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Thursday, December 20th from 4 to 7 p.m. His Funeral Service will be celebrated on Friday December 21, in Christ Episcopal Church, 750 Main Street, Waltham at 11 a.m. A lunch reception will immediately follow the service. Burial in Newton Cemetery is private.

Members of Waltham Masonic Triad Lodge A.F. & A.M. will meet at 6:00 p.m. Thursday for their ritual.
