Bedford - Mr. Frank A. Tiano Jr., of Bedford, formerly of Waltham, died Tuesday, September 13, 2011 in Newton-Wellesley Hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 73.
Frank was born in Waltham on November 27, 1937, a son of the late Frank and Jennie (Fucci) Tiano. A lifelong Waltham resident he moved to Bedford last year to be closer to his children. He was a 1956 graduate of Waltham High School and was later inducted into the Waltham High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
His professional career began at Raytheon Corporation. In 1977, he started Century Glass with a business partner before assuming full ownership in the early 1980's. Aside his son, Matthew, he ran this Waltham based business until sickness forced his retirement in 2007. In 1958, he wed his high school sweetheart, the late Rosemary J. Smith in Saint Mary's Church. Together they raised and educated their four children in Waltham where they shared over 51 years together.
Frank was a talented athlete and spent many hours on the athletic fields in Waltham. He loved football, basketball, baseball and tennis. During and after his active years he treasured watching his children and grandchildren pursue their athletic goals. An active member for over 50 years of the Dante Alighieri Lodge #648, Sons of Italy in Waltham, he enjoyed many of the social and family activities of his lodge and the friendships that were a result of his membership.
He loved to travel as well as entertain at his home in Waltham and on Cape Cod at Mashnee Island. Social by nature he enjoyed the company of his family and friends but was most happy when with the love of his life, Rosemary.
Frank's wife of 51 years, Rosemary A. (Smith) Tiano died January 24, 2010. He was also predeceased by his brother, Roy Tiano.
He leaves his children, Michael A. Tiano and his wife, Lisa, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Matthew J. Tiano and his wife, Donnamarie, of Bedford, Frank A. Tiano, III and his wife, Mary, of Chelmsford, and Jennifer A. Falzone and her husband, Michael, of Bedford; his siblings, Anna McCue of Waltham, Lawrence Njus and his wife, Beatrice, of Billerica, Doris Muirhead of Marlborough; 12 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild and several nieces & nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Frank's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Sunday, September 18th, from 2 to 6 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Monday morning before leaving in procession to Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
