Weston – Mr. Frederick S.E. Page, of Weston, died Saturday, November 3, 2012 at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was 97.
Fred was born in Waltham on September 17, 1915, a son of the late Robert and Susan (Eadie) Page, and graduated from Waltham High School in 1934. A year later, after having delivered papers and hung awnings to pay the bills, he started a range and heating oil business that later became Page Brothers in Waltham.
In 1940, he married his sweetheart, Waltham native Edna B. Gladen, to whom he was married until Edna's death on September 27, 2005. The couple lived for a time in West Newton before making their home in Weston in 1950. They were longtime members of First Lutheran Church in Waltham.
With the outbreak of World War II Fred left home to serve with the United States Army in Europe. Upon his return to Waltham in 1945 he jumped right back into the family business with his twin brother, Bob, and Page Brothers became a leading heating supply and service company in the area. The company was later sold to Jenney Oil Company in Waltham.
In 1954 the brothers gambled on a piece of land in Stow that had a nine-hole golf course and clubhouse that later became one of the premier public golf courses in the country, Stow Acres Country Club. Among those who played at Stow in those early years were President Dwight Eisenhower and his successor, John Kennedy. After its founding, brothers Fred and Bob, and younger brother Tom who ran the inside operation, worked hard to grow the enterprise into a 36 hole operation. Fred retired in 1987 after the family sold the course but always maintained his passion for the sport.
Fred leaves his children, Susan E. Olson and her husband, Clarence, of Marathon, Florida, Frederick S. Page and Ivy Bredbury of Framingham and Barbara P. Rowe and her husband, William, of Weston; his grandchildren, Kristine Bumpus, Michael Olson, Justin, Alison, Jarett and Brett Rowe; 6 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeacesed by his granddaughter Lisa Pinkham and brothers Robert and Thomas Page.
