Weston – Mr. Frederick A. Woodside, of Weston, died Thursday, May 29, 2008 in Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He was 88. Born in Waltham, a son of the late James and Amy (Yates) Woodside, he was raised in Waltham and lived most of his life in Weston. He was a graduate of Waltham High School. After high school, Fred served with the United States Army in the Pacific during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received in Dutch New Guinea on November 29, 1944 during the build-up to liberate the Philippine Islands. He left the service as a 2nd Lieutenant in January, 1946. He owned and operated Woodside Tire and Battery Company on Weston Street in Waltham since 1946. Though semi-retired he was still often seen at the station. He was a member and past Grand Master (1958) of the Masons Waltham Triad Lodge A.F. & A.M and was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Weston. Fred leaves his wife of 62 years, Anne E. (Roy) Woodside; his children, Maria E. Freitag and her husband, Robert, of Newington, Connecticut, Frederick R. Woodside and his wife, Linda, of Weston and Robert I. Woodside and his wife, Pat, of Waltham; his grandchildren, Amy Johnson and her husband, Aaron, Justin Woodside, Nick Woodside and his wife, Celeste, Adam Woodside, Rob W. Freitag, and Kathy Clarke and her husband, Mike; his great-grandchildren, Gabriel Johnson and Neko Woodside; his brother, Robert A. Woodside of Waltham; his sister-in-law, Mary Woodside of North Billerica and many nieces and nephews. He was a brother of the late James A. Woodside, Amy Flagg and Emma Huntley. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral at 10 a.m. Tuesday in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham. Burial will be in Linwod Cemetery, Weston.
