Gaetano 'Guy' Criscenzo, of Waltham, Massachusetts, died peacefully on January 24, 2020 at the age of 88.
Gaetano was born in Aragona, Sicily, Italy, son of the late Gerlando and Angela (Fantucchio) Criscenzo. Raised in Sicily, educated in Milan, Guy also served honorably in the Italian Army. He married Teresa Buscemi on April 30, 1960 in La Chiesa (Church) du Amatrici, in Aragona, and they then immigrated to the United States in 1961.
While in Sicily he worked in his much loved profession as a barber including as a barber in the Italian Army. He began learning his skill at eight years old and completed his education in Milan.
Upon arriving in America and settling in Waltham, he worked in Newton as a Barber for Al Ferrara's Barber Shop. In 1966, he opened and operated his own shop, 'Guy's Barbershop' on Newton Street in Waltham for over ten years. He then became employed at Raytheon Corporation in Waltham before retiring in 1997.
Guy will forever be remembered by his family, friends and customers as a smiling, gentle man with only the kindest words to say about people. His family was the center of his life. He had a passion for opera music, with his favorite being Rossini's 'Barber of Seville.'
Guy is predeceased by his siblings, Calogero Criscenzo, Gianni Criscenzo and Stella (Criscenzo) Grecco.
Guy and Teresa were married for 59 years. He also leaves behind his sons Gerry Criscenzo, step-father of Coleman and Jamie Cecca, Collin Cecca and Ashly Lomuto, and Colby Cecca, Raymond Criscenzo, and Gaetano Criscenzo, father of Guy's grandsons Vincent and Roman Criscenzo and their mother, former daughter-in-law, Michelle Lajeunesse.
In addition he leaves behind Chrissie Devlin, mother of Gerry's step-children, Marisela Carr, fiancé of Raymond and Maria Sloane, Gaetano's partner of ten years.
Guy leaves behind his siblings Salvatore Criscenzo (wife Alba) of Ontario, Canada, Vincenzo Criscenzo (wife Pina) of Rome, Italy, Madelina (Criscenzo) Grecco (husband Gaetano) of Rome, Italy, Julia (Criscenzo) Spatola (husband Raymond - deceased) and Teresa (Criscenzo) Papia (husband Gianni - deceased), both of Ontario, Canada, and Mariella (Criscenzo) Cannistraro (husband Alfonso- deceased) of Sicily, Italy; and many nieces & nephews in the US, Canada, Sicily, Rome and Australia.
Family and friends will honor and remember Guy's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, January 29th, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and again at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday morning January 30 before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30a.m. Entombment will follow in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum, Waltham.
