Waltham – Mr. Georg Schkuta, of Waltham, died Tuesday, July 24, 2018 in Mount Auburn Hospital after a short illness. He was 96.
Born on April 24, 1922 in Ptkatenzy, Ukraine he was a son of the late Andrew and Matrona (Sopilhjak) Schkuta. Raised and educated in the Ukraine he married Aira V. Niittymaki on August 7, 1953 in England and later immigrated to the United States in 1968 settling in Waltham.
Georg worked many years as a machinist for Nichols Co. and previously for J. L. Thompson before retiring in 1988.
Georg had a keen interest and passion for oil painting and as a member of both the Waltham and Watertown Art Societies in which many of his works were exhibited at various times. He was an active member of Lakeview Congregation Church and attended events at the Ukrainian American Education Center in Boston. For many years post retirement he and Aira would often travel across the country in their camper and all of the grandchildren at various times accompanied them on a vacation. He loved his home in Waltham and spending time in his gardens.
In addition to his wife of almost 65 years, Aira he leaves their children, Ann Schkuta of Norwood, Andrew Schkuta (Cheryl) of Burlington and Paul Schkuta (Rhonda) of Imperial, Pennsylvania; his grandchildren, Katherine Lazarides-Zwirner (Torbert), Anesti Lazarides, Mimi Lazarides, Alexandra 'Allie' Lazarides, George Schkuta (Kristi), William Schkuta and Tyler Schkuta; his great-grandchildren Leora and Annalise; nieces & nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Georg's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Monday, July 30th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again on Tuesday morning where his funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
