Mr. George S. Babcock, a longtime Watertown resident, died Thursday, February 8, 2007 in his home, He was 90. George leaves his wife of 53 years, Rita A. (Bouchie) Babcock; two daughters, Virginia B. Caskie and her husband, David, of Watertown and Donna R. Mello of Plymouth; two brothers, Clayton and Harvey Matthews of New Brunswick, Canada; four grandchildren, Michelle Ducrot, Brian Mello, Melissa Mello and Jenna Caskie and one great-grandchild, Amelie Ducrot and many nieces and nephews. He was born in Campobello, New Brunswick, Canada, a son of the late Gorham J. and Mona M. (Harvey) Babcock and had lived in Watertown for almost 60 years. George was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He was predeceased by his siblings, Virginia Newman, Bertha Sare, Galba Matthews, Max Daggett, Mary Jackson, Marvin Matthews , Harold Matthews, William Matthews, Shirley Brown, Kathleen Jackson, Ruth Calder and Marion Cline. George worked as a machinist for Textron Industries in Braintree, retiring in 1982. Previously, he had worked for many years at the J. L. Thompson Company, in Waltham. An avid New England sports fan, he loved the New England Patriots and The Boston Red Sox and like so many others, their World Series win brought him much happiness. He enjoyed summering in York, Maine and would walk the beach endlessly. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Monday in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte.20), Waltham. Burial will be in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Watertown Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Partners Hospice, 281 Winter Street, Waltham, MA 02451.
