George L. Bowman

Mr. George L. “Sonny” Bowman, Jr., of W. Barnstable died Thursday, July 13, 2006 in The Pavilion Nursing Facility, Hyannis, He was 70. He worked for a high-tech engineering firm, A.S.E.C., in Burlington, for proposals and publications related to National Defense and NATO. Several of his cover illustrations for the U.S. Air Force Satellite program were sent to President Carter and his entire cabinet. He also illustrated and designed children’s educational books in Boston and New York City. His life-long love of being an artist became his career. Some of his credits include being listed in Who’s Who in American Art; Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in America (special 50th edition), The Louis Bankoff painting award, The John Cooley painting award, The Aldro Hibbard painting award, New England Book Designers Award, and many others. His paintings were selected for the New York Life Calendar Art, 1980 & 1981 while on display at Grand Central Galleries. He was represented in many private collections including the Virginia Mortgage Corp., Honeywell Corp., and The 3-M Manufacturing Co. of America, Harvard University and Cape Cod Bank & Trust. Born in Newburyport, he was a son of the late George L. Sr. and Dorothy M. (Forsey) Bowman. He studied and received degrees from both the Boston School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University, graduating with honors. He had served in the United States Marines. He was the father of the late Christiana Bowman He leaves two sisters, Betty J. Hurnowicz of Weymouth and Joyce Condon of Waltham; two nephews, James G. Condon & his wife Gina of Waltham and Jack A. Condon of Sherman Oaks, CA; one niece, Jill Carlson & her husband Wayne of Waltham and one grandniece, Georgi Condon of Waltham. Funeral services and burial will be private.
