Bedford – Mr. George A Doorakian, of Bedford, died on Sunday, August 30, 2020 in Mass General Hospital, Boston. He was 80 years old.
George was born in Boston on April 3, 1940 to George and Libby (Macone) Doorakian. His family moved from Cambridge to Waltham when George was young; he was a graduate of Waltham High School and later from Northeastern University. In 1966 he married Paula Shaughnessy in St. Mary's Church in Waltham, the pair lived in Waltham for 10 years before moving to Bedford where they have been residents since.
George worked for many years as a research chemist at Dow Chemical; retiring with dozens of patents for his inventions. However, his passion was introducing new daylilies to the world. George was a Master Rosarian with the American Rose Society, National Group, and a member of the local group, New England Rose Society. He received the highest horticultural award from the American Hemerocallis (Daylily) Society, the "Stout Silver Medal" for his daylily cultivar, "Rose F. Kennedy," diploid.
In addition to his wife of fifty-five years, Paula, he leaves his son, Duane J. Doorakian (Bonny) of Marshfield; his grandchildren, Logan and Mason Doorakian; his sister Ann T. LaChapelle (Fred) of Canton; his sisters-in-law, Muriel Simeone of Waltham and Diane Doorakian of Florida and also leaves nieces and nephews.
He was also the brother of the late Francis R. Doorakian.
Family and friends will honor and remember George's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Thursday, September 3rd from 5 to 8 p.m. George's Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 4th in Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham. Burial in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham will follow.
