Waltham – Mr. George W. Hatfield, Jr., of Waltham, died Thursday, October 14, 2010 at Kindred Hospital in Boston. He was 85.
George was born in Waltham on August 31, 1925, a son of the late George W., Sr. and Mary J. (McDade) Hatfield. He was raised in Waltham and had also lived in Weston for twenty years before returning to Waltham twenty-eight years ago. He worked for many years as a licensed dispensing optician specializing in contact lenses until his retirement twenty-five years ago.
He was a graduate of Waltham High School, Manter Hall Prep School in Cambridge and the Fenway School of Optics in Boston. George was a proud World War II veteran serving with the United States Navy. He was also a 3rd and 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. In his spare time he enjoyed gardening and reading.
George was the husband of forty-five years to the late Margaret M. (O’Connell) Hatfield and leaves his sister, Eileen McNeil and her husband, Bill, of Sellersville, Pennsylvania; three sisters-in-law, Mary Monahan of Waltham, Eileen Flynn of Watertown and Antoinette O’Connell of Wayland and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was also the brother of the late Mary V. Shaughnessy.
Family and friends will honor and remember George’s life by gathering to visit on Monday, October 18th in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte.20), Waltham from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. before leaving in procession to Saint Jude Church, 147 Main Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Saint Patrick’s Cemetery, Watertown.
