Waltham – Mr. George R. Noone, of Waltham, died Thursday, May 19, 2011 at his home. He was 88.
George was born in Boston on January 26, 1923, a son of the late George and Jennie (Labrie) Noone and had been a Waltham resident for the past forty-four years. Before that he had lived in Cambridge and in Burlington. Until his retirement he worked as the bar manager for the Marriott Hotel in Newton.
During World War II he served with the United States Army Air Corps as a navigator aboard a B-29 bomber stationed in the Pacific. During the war George earned the Distinguished Flying Cross in July, 1945. From April to July of that year he was awarded five Air Medals, two Distinguished Unit Emblems, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze service stars and the World War II Victory Medal. After the war, George continued to serve with the United States Air Force Reserve, retiring as a captain in 1961.
He leaves his wife, Mildred P. (Clinton) Noone; his son, Michael S. Noone and his wife, Linda, of Londonderry, New Hampshire; his grandchildren, John Doyle, Jennifer, Michael, Jr. and Gregory Noone; his great-grandchildren, Trinity and Abigail Doyle and many nieces and nephews.
He was also the father of the late Jeanne Marie Doyle and brother of the late Norman Noone.
Family and friends will honor and remember George’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Sunday, May 22nd, from 2 to 5 p.m. and again at 9:30 a.m. on Monday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Jude Church, 147 Main Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be private.
