Mr. George L. Pennachio, of Waltham, died suddenly on Saturday, June 2, 2012. He was 78.
George was born on February 22, 1934 in Waltham a son of the late Leo and Josephine (Nutile) Pennachio and was a lifelong Waltham resident. George honorably served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict and was awarded the following medals: Good Conduct, United Defense, United Nations, Korean-China Service, Navy Occupation of Europe, Navy "E" and Presidential Unit Citation for Korea. He was a proud veteran and member of the V.F.W. Lodge #2152 and the American Legion Post #156 in Waltham.
On April 12, 1959 he married Marguerite M. Howley in The Sacred Heart Church in Newton Centre.
He worked for the City of Waltham as a heavy equipment operator for many years before his retirement. He had a self-taught ability to work with anything automotive: from simple repairs and maintenance to rebuilding a Chevy S10 pickup truck at the age of 73. He was also skilled as a carpenter and often had a project or two in progress for family and friends.
George is predeceased by his siblings, Louise Nutile, Margaret Phipps and Michael Pennachio.
In addition to his wife of 53 years, Marguerite, he leaves his children, Deborah Lowre and her husband, Mark, of Brighton, AnnMarie Pennachio of Waltham, George L. "Beaver" Pennachio and his wife, Liz, of Waltham and Joseph C. Pennachio and his wife, Charlie, of Worcester and his grandchildren, Nicholas and Kathryn Lowre, Joey, Morgan, Cyrus and Ryan Pennachio.
Family and friends will honor and remember George's's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, June 6th from 5 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
