George J. Renna

Waltham – Mr. George J. Renna, of Waltham, died Friday, September 30, 2011 at the Chelsea Soldiers Home. He was 95.

George was born in Quincy on June 3, 1916, a son of the late Salvatore and Frances (Fanara) Renna, both natives of Sicily. He moved to Waltham with his family in 1927 and had been a lifelong resident. One of nine children, George graduated from Waltham High School in 1934 and was one of four brothers who served in the military during World War II.

He joined the United States Army in 1943 and arrived in Normandy days after the initial invasion of Europe in June, 1944. He was a member of 33rd Armored Regiment that participated in the battles of Northern France, the Rhineland and the Ardennes, better known as the 'Battle of the Bulge' during the winter of 1944/45. His unit arrived in Central Europe in the spring of 1945.

After the war he came home and began a more than fifty year career as a barber, first in West Newton and then on River Street in Waltham. Even in retirement George continued to work one day a week until he was 92.

George was a member of the PFC John M. Sullivan USMC VFW Post No. 10334 and Waltham's Dante Alighieri Lodge #648, Order of Sons of Italy in America where he was also a past president. He was also a member and past president of The Master Barbers and Beauticians of America.

He leaves his wife of 68 years, Madeline J. (Graceffa) Renna; his children, Richard L. Renna and his wife, Norma, of Westwood and Robert G. Renna and his wife, Carolyn, of Waltham; his grandchildren, Jody Chase and her husband, Matthew, of Longmeadow, Tobey Santamaria and her husband, Albert, of Billerica, Jessica Iannino and her husband, Michael, of Franklin and Matthew Renna and his wife, Allison, of Hingham; his great-grandchildren Colby Chase, Chloe Iannino, Emily, Katie and Carolyn Santamaria and Michael and Jack Renna; his siblings, Sadie Romard and Peter Renna, both of Waltham and many survived by many nieces and nephews.

George was also the great-grandfather of the late Mackenzie Renna and a brother of the late Mary Renna, Josephine Donati, Catherine Agresta, William, John and Gaspar Renna.
