George Sweetnam

Waltham – Mr. George Sweetnam, of Waltham, died on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 in Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He was 95.
George was born in Brookline on January 3, 1925, a son of the late Richard and Frances (Collins) Sweetnam. He was raised and educated in Newton where as a youth he loved playing pick-up hockey on Crystal Lake and going into the Boston Garden with his buddies to watch the Bruins play.
Immediately after graduating high school he enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17 where he served as a gunner aboard the USS San Jacinto (CVL-30), an Independence-class light aircraft carrier that served during World War II. She was named for the Battle of San Jacinto during the Texas Revolution and former President George H.W. Bush was one of his shipmates. George saw heavy fighting during the war and remembered vividly firing upon Japanese planes diving towards his ship.
After the war George returned home to Newton and got a job at Grover Cronin's on Moody Street in Waltham, it was there he met the love of his life, Beverly A. Mollica. The pair were married in St. Mary's Church on April 11, 1948. They first settled on Virginia Road, then Curve Street and then finally to The Village on Clark's Pond, all in Waltham. George and Beverly loved to travel and had been to Europe over 30 times. They also had a special affinity for Golden Retrievers and had adopted many over the years as they were members of the Golden Retriever Rescue Society in Hudson.
George retired from Raytheon in 1986 after working as their transportation manager. In his spare time he loved to golf and was a member of Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland. After he was no longer able to play he would visit every weekend, commandeer a golf cart and spend the day catching up with all his friends throughout the course. He was proud to have been Club Champion twice; twenty-five years apart.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 53 years, Beverly A. (Mollica) Sweetnam and is survived by many nieces, nephews and their families.
He was the brother of the late Richard K. Sweetnam, William J. Sweetnam and Robert C. Sweetnam.
Family and friends will honor and remember George's life by gathering on Friday, January 17th in Christ Church, 750 Main St., Waltham where his Funeral Service will be celebrated at 12 p.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
