Mrs. Gertrude F. (Flanagan) McGinty, of Newton, formerly of South Dennis and Waltham died Friday, November 22, 2019 in The Falls at Coordingly Dam. She was 99.
Gertrude was born November 15, 1920 in Cambridge a daughter of the late Eugene and Ellen (Coleman) Flanagan. Raised in Cambridge she graduated from Cambridge High and Latin. She was married to Robert J. McGinty until his death on December 2, 2004. They lived many years in Waltham before moving to South Dennis in 1979 where they made Cape Cod their home.
Gert worked many years at Bentley University as a secretary in its Office of Career Planning and Placement before retiring.
She loved the game of golf and was a familiar face at Dennis Pines among other local Cape courses and enjoyed the game even until the age of 91. She spent many days on the beautiful beaches of Cold Storage and Mayflower Beaches. Gert also enjoyed playing cards, a game of mahjong and bowling in various leagues with friends on the Cape.
In addition to her husband, Robert she is predeceased by her grandson, Colin McGinty and siblings, Charles, Joseph and Daniel Flanagan, Theresa McDonald, Rita Shaughnessy and Helen Edwards.
She leaves her children, Patricia Parsons (Kenneth) of Lynnfield, Robert J. McGinty (Kerry) of Lincoln, Paul J. McGinty (Rebecca Lee) of Newton, Eileen Kroeger (Robert) of Newton, Thomas McGinty (Esther) of Chelmsford, James E. McGinty (Jane) of Hudson, Mary Duran (Robert) of Tuscon, Arizona and Joseph M. McGinty of Newton; grandchildren, Kathryn Boyle (Robert), Kristen Amarante (Cory), Amy Chiaravalloti (Gino), Damon McGinty (Cindy), Mitchell, Devon and Jaden McGinty, Brett McGinty (Eileen), Ian and Danielle McGinty, Ryan McGinty (Simran), Jordan McGinty (Anna), Kendra McGinty, Megan Hampson (Jared) and Caitlin Duran; 13 great-grandchildren; her sister, Rose Dooley (late Joseph) of Cohasset; nieces & nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Gert's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Monday, November 25th from 5 to 7 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Massachusetts National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.
