Waltham – Mrs. Gertrude F. (Loftus) Scafidi, of Waltham, died Monday, May 23, 2016 in Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge. She was 92.
Gertrude was born in the Brighton neighborhood of Boston on October 13, 1923 and was raised in Waltham by her grandmother, Mary J. Timmons. She went to work at a young age the Waltham Watch Factory and later worked for years as a floor manager at Moe Black's Store on Lexington Street. She was a devout Catholic and had been a long-time parishioner of Saint Mary's Church. She was also very proud of her Irish heritage and loved to support her beloved Boston Celtics.
The wife of the late James J. Scafidi, she leaves her children, John J. 'Jack' Scafidi of Waltham, Marie F. Varakis and her husband, Tim, of Hudson, William R. 'Bill' Scafidi and his wife, Dianne, of Randolph, Joseph J. Scafidi of Waltham, Peter P. Scafidi of Waltham, Kevin J. Scafidi and his wife, Dawn, of Randolph and Brian M. Scafidi and his companion, Sherry Johnson, of Watertown. She was the beloved 'Nanafidi' to her thirteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren and also leaves many nieces and nephews.
Gert was also the mother of the late James M. Scafidi and the sister of the late Mary E. King, Richard Loftus and John Loftus.
Family and friends will honor and remember Gertrude's life by gathering to visit at 8:30 a.m. on Friday morning, May 27th in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
