Watertown - Retired Boston Firefighter Hazen A. 'Al' Chalmers of Watertown died Friday, November 5, 2004 at Newton-Wellesly Hospital. He was 78. Born and raised in East Boston, a son of the late Hazen A. and Julia (Moran) Chalmers, he was a Watertown resident for the past 53 years. He graduated from Commerce High School in Boston and joined the U.S. Navy during World War II serving aboard the destroyer USS Hall in the North Atlantic, West Africa and in the South Pacific. After the war he was appointed to the Boston Fire Department in 1947. He served with Ladder 21, Engine 56 and then joined the marine unit serving aboard Engine 31 'St. Florian' and Engine 47 'Fire Fighter'. He retired in January, 1991. Mr. Chalmers was a longtime parishioner of Saint Patrick' Church in Watertown and he was a member of American Legion Post No. 156 in Waltham, the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 718 and the 'Tin Can Sailors' Association. He leaves his wife of 57 years, Lillian A. (Monsour) Chalmers; his children, Joyce A. Chalmers and David A. Chalmers and his wife Marie, all of Watertown; 6 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral at 8 a.m. Tuesday from The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham followed by a Funeral Mass in Saint Patrick's Church, 212 Main Street, Watertown at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett. Visiting hours are Monday from 4 to 8 p.m.
