Helen (Katsioules) Buras

December 1, 1936 — August 20, 2020

West Newton – Mrs. Helen (Katsioules) Buras, of West Newton, died at her home on Thursday, August 20, 2020. She was 83 years old.

Helen was born in Boston on December 1, 1936 to the late Charles and Toula (Athansopolous) Katsioules. Raised in the South End and Dorchester neighborhoods, she graduated from the Dorchester High School for Girls in Codman Square. Shortly thereafter she began working as an electron microscope technician for the Cabot Corporation in Cambridge.

Even from a young age Helen never shied away from a challenging situation and always lived life to its fullest; she entered kindergarten without knowing a word of English, earned her driver's license at the age of 38, and traveled extensively with her husband throughout Europe and Asia. A daughter of Greek immigrants, she embraced her culture and proudly carried on the rich traditions of her upbringing as she raised her own family.

One of her best days came when she met Poughkeepsie, New York native Michael A. Buras at Newton's Totem Pole Ballroom. The two quickly became inseparable and in 1957 married at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Boston. They moved to West Newton in November of 1965 where they would raise their two beloved boys, Michael and Christopher.

She and her family were founding and faithful members of Saint Demetrious Greek Orthodox Church, at its first home in Newton Lower Falls, and later, at the new location in Weston.

Helen was a devoted wife and mother and adored her grandchildren. Helen truly felt 'complete' as long as her family was by her side. She had a taste for life and loved shopping (and especially enjoyed a good bargain at Marshall's!) and worked at Grover Cronin's Department Store on Moody Street in Waltham during the busy Christmas season. She was a friendly face and fast-friend to the many customers she helped.

Later in life she loved trips to Mashpee on the Cape with her family and always enjoyed board games like cribbage and scrabble or playing bridge at the card table.

Helen's husband, Michael, died on July 20, 2010.

She leaves her children, Michael A. Buras (Mary Ann) of West Newton, and Christopher C. Buras of Dover; her grandchildren, Nicholas, Alexander, Caroline, Angela, and Jennifer Buras and her sister, Christine Katsioules of Waltham.

Family will honor and remember Helen's life at a private funeral service in Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Weston. Burial will follow in Newton Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Demetrious Church, 57 Brown Street, Weston, MA 02493.
