Waltham – Mrs. Helen C. (Phelan) Noonan, of Waltham, formerly of Watertown, died Saturday, November 20, 2021 at Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln. She was 92.
Helen was born in Cambridge on September 11, 1929, a daughter of the late John and Kathleen (Early) Phelan, and was raised in Watertown. She was a graduate of Saint Patrick's High School in Watertown.
On September 20, 1952 she married Waltham native Thomas J. Noonan, Jr. and the couple made Waltham their lifelong home. Helen and Tom were active members of Saint Jude Parish.
Helen worked for a time as an operator for New England Telephone Company and after her children were grown re-entered the workforce as a secretary for the Massachusetts Farm Bureau in Waltham. After that she held the same position at Bachrach Studios in Watertown.
Her greatest joy was found being in the company of her eight grandchildren who affectionately called her 'Grammie'.
The beloved wife of Thomas J. Noonan, Jr., she also leaves her children, Barbara A. Toomey (John) of Maynard, Thomas J. Noonan, III (Elizabeth); Deborah J. Burley (John), all of Waltham and Elaine T. Thompson (Andrew) of N. Grafton; her grandchildren, Samantha Toomey, Juliette Noonan, Genevieve Noonan, Thomas J. Noonan, IV, Michael Burley, Amanda Lania (Steve), Eric Thompson and Sean Thompson; her great-granddaughter, Grace Lania and many nieces, nephews and their families.
Helen was also a sister of the late Jack, Edward and Robert Phelan, Doris Noonan, Kay Bry and Madeline McAllister.
Family and friends will honor and remember Helen's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday, November 26th from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Jude Church, 147 Main Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Saint Patrick's Cemetery, Watertown.
