Weston - Mrs. Helen E. (MacDonald) Sgroi, of Weston, died Thursday, September 13, 2012 at Union Hospital in Lynn. She was 89.
Helen was born in Lynn on September 18, 1922, a daughter of the late Allan C. and Marion (Chisholm) MacDonald, both natives of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. She was raised in Lynn where she graduated from Lynn Classical High School. After that she worked for a time at the General Electric Company.
She and her family moved to Weston in 1954 where she had been a resident since. Always an active person Helen loved to travel, touring around the country and around the globe. Her needlework was envied and appreciated by family and friends and she loved all sorts of board games and playing bingo.
The wife of the late Edmund A. Sgroi, she leaves her children, Allan R. Sgroi of Acton, Jacqueline M. Harrington of Peabody, Priscilla M. Barrett and Richard J. Sgroi, both of Reading; 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Helen was the mother of the late James W. Sgroi and a sister of the late Margaret Munn, Forrest MacDonald and Allan MacDonald.
Family and friends will honor and remember Helen's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Sunday, September 16th, from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Monday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Julia's Church, 374 Boston Post Road, Weston where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, Weston.
