Henry E. Menelly

Mr. Henry E. Menelly, of Waltham, formerly of Newton died on Sunday, March 24, 2019 in Newton-Wellesley Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 87.

Born in Waltham on February 4, 1932 he was a son of the late Italian immigrants Ernest and Concetta (Bodessa) Menelly. Raised in Waltham he was a graduate of Waltham Technical Vocational High School. He proudly served in the United States Army honorably during the Korean War and was discharged as a sergeant after having spent two years in Germany. He married Claire C. Astone on April 19, 1959 in Saint Bernard's Church in West Newton. He lived most of his life in Newton before moving to Waltham six years ago.

He joined his brothers in the family business Midnite Foods and Laundromat in Newtonville since 1953 and became sole proprietor of the business in 1978 until retiring in 1996.

He kept active as a member of the Newton YMCA for over 40 years and where enjoyed games of racquetball and the close relationships of friends. He also enjoyed animals, the outdoors, the ocean and music.

Henry is predeceased by his siblings, Phillip, Ernest, Joseph and Russell Menelly, Mary Moniz and Eva Porter; in-laws, Barbara and Lillian Menelly.

He leaves his wife of 59 years, Claire C. (Astone) Menelly; his children, Arlene A. Onorato and Steven of Billerica, Doreen M.C. Menelly Peixinho and Robert of Waltham and Mark Menelly and Jennifer of Framingham; his grandson Steven P. Onorato of Woburn; his sisters-in-law Frances Tobio of Falmouth, Leona Denaro of Mashpee, Marie Passanisi of Newton and Irene Astone of Falmouth; also survived by many nieces & nephews. Henry also leaves Michael Proctor of Framingham, Dave Chagnon of Waltham who were both considered part of the family.

Family and friends will honor and remember Henry's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday, March 29th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Help of Christians Church, 573 Washington Street, Newton where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Newton Cemetery, Newton.
