Herbert H. Johnson

Waltham – Mr. Herbert H. Johnson, of Waltham, and Woodbury, Vermont died Saturday, April 9, 2016 in his home. He was 91.

Herb was born on February 21, 1925 in Montpelier, Vermont, a son of the late Elmer Herbert and Winona Mae (Griffith) Johnson. He attended schools in Barre, Vermont.

During World War II he served in the Pacific with the United States Marine Corps and participated in the battle of Okinawa; the final struggle before the Japanese surrender that counted 50,000 Americans as casualties.

When he got out of the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton in California he thumbed home to Vermont and began a new life filled with adventure, peace and family times.

Herb worked for the Raytheon Company for many years as an electrical plater. He enjoyed traveling and maintaining "Camp Herbie" in Woodbury, Vermont where he would love to split wood for the camp fire. Herb was known as "Crash Johnson" when he raced stock cars in the 1940's and had a passion for riding his Harley.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mildred Irene Lamburn Johnson, his daughter, Ann Marie Kerivan, his son-in-law George Edward Kerivan, and his siblings Marilyn Matte, Reggie Johnson and Larry Johnson.

He leaves his wife, Bertha (Isham) (Blair) Johnson; his children, Judith Mae JohnsonLembo of Waltham, David Alan Johnson, and the mother of his children Karen Marie Johnson, of Waltham, and Paul Herbert Johnson of Sudbury; his grandchildren, Trisha Ann Lembo Riccardi and her husband, Michael, Christopher George Kerivan and his wife, Keila, Shawn Edward Kerivan, Kristin Marie Johnson, Alicia Jean Johnson, Melissa Irene Johnson, Tyler David Johnson, and Kayley Jean Sherman Johnson; his step-son, Duane Marvin Blair and his wife, Elisa, of Fruita, Colorado, and his step grandchildren, Janelle, Christopher, Megan, Dakota, K.C., Luken, Isabelle Blair; his brother, Richard "Butch" Johnson of Barre,Vermont and many nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.

Family and friends will honor and remember Herb's life by gathering for calling hours on Thursday, April 14th, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Holcomb-Des Groseilliers Funeral Home, 17 Church Street, Hardwick, Vermont and again on Friday when his funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at South Woodbury Cemetery in Woodbury. Reception following immediately at the American Legion Hardwick, 15 North Main Street in Hardwick.
