Howard F. Garniss was born in Boston, MA in April of 1930. He was the son of Freeman Hathaway Garniss and Sybil Nute Garniss of Hingham. He graduated from Whitman High School and received his Bachelor of Music degree from Boston University. He later received his Master of Music Education degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He was an instrumental instructor in the Boston Public Schools from 1953-1970 and in the Waltham Public Schools from 1971-1980. The Waltham Kennedy Middle School Band under his direction was invited to perform three times at Massachusetts' All State Music Conventions. He was the Secretary/Treasurer of the Boston Musicians' Association Local 9-535 from 1980-1992. He was an active musician for over 40 years, on string bass, bass guitar and other instruments in a variety of venues. He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity.
He leaves his wife, Joan Brewster Garniss and two children, Gretchen (Greta), and Jonathan and wife Dawn Diamante; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Services will be private.
