Irene B. Volz

June 28, 1927 — June 9, 2015

Irene B. Volz passed away this week, June 9, 2015, after an end-of-life battle with cancer. Born Irene Piche in Providence RI, June 28, 1927, of Elsie Munro and George Piche, she lived all her adult life in Boston with her loving husband of 69 years, Orville F. Volz, who survives her. Her brother John C. Munro pre-deceased her.

Orville and Irene had three boys, Eric D. Volz (deceased) formerly married to Barbara D. Volz and Barbara J. Pitman; Carl F. Volz, now of Watertown, MA, married to Jan M. Volz; and Kevin M. Volz, now of Rutland, VT, married to Melissa R. Pierce and formerly to Marieken Volz.

Their grandchildren include Sandra and Nicole Volz of Carl and Jan Volz; David and Anya Volz of Kevin and Marieken Volz; and Kirsten, Bradford and Kerrie Volz of Eric and Barbara (Pitman) Volz. Our beloved foster brother Rick Jefferson (now of Fort White, FL) came to us when he was six and lived with us for the three and a half years and became part of our family forever. Barbara D. Volz was like a daughter to Irene and Orville and the lengths she went to stay in touch over the past 50 years, right up to her dying days were appreciated greatly by the entire family.

Irene loved life and everything to do with it: Being with her family, cooking up a feast, playing cribbage with her dear Orville, snuggling up with a good mystery, watching Masterpiece Theater, camping and traveling, being at the ocean. Irene and Orville loved to dance, and spent many an evening through the decades in each other's loving arms. It was a metaphor for how they met life and all its challenges, never missing a step, moving gracefully –inspirationally, together through and around all that life has thrown at them.

Orville's adoration for his dear Irene –their love for each other, was the most touching of love stories. They were each other's best friends and first loves and remained steadfastly by each other's side for 71 years through more than their share of life's hardships and joys.

She was an inspiration and example to her family, holding honesty, kindness, and charity in highest regard, tempered by her wit, wisdom, withering sarcasm and sardonic humor. She will be greatly, sorely missed but her spirit and humor will live on in each of those whose lives she touched.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Irene's memory can be sent to Seasons Hospice Foundation, at www.seasonsfoundation.org.
