Fort Myers, Fla. – Mr. Italo G. DiNitto, of Fort Myers, formerly of Lawrence and North Andover, died Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He was 85.
Italo was born in Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano, Italy, a town half-hour south of Monte Cassino, on January 1, 1932 to the late Amelio and Gemma (Soave) (DiNitto) Rotondo. During the war years he moved with his family to the relative safety of Rome before returning home.
After high school he became a paratrooper instructor for the Italian Army and in 1956 was able to secure passage to the United States where he came to live with relatives in Providence, Rhode Island. It was there that the best part of his life began.
On June 24, 1961 he married Providence native Adriana DelSignore in Holy Ghost Church and lived for a time in Lawrence before moving to North Andover in 1971. Italo was a graduate of Fazio Beauty Academy in Lawrence and was the owner of Italo Hair Salon in Andover and in North Andover until his retirement. 2003 brought a move to Fort Myers where Italo and Adriana belonged to Saint Columbkille Parish.
Italo was a passionate golfer and an avid soccer fan but found his greatest joy in the company of his cherished grandchildren.
In addition to his beloved wife of fifty-six years, Adriana, he leaves his children, Lisa DiNitto and her spouse, Casey, of South Plainfield, New Jersey and Claudia Spada and her husband, David, of Weston; his grandchildren, David and Deahna Spada; his brothers, Elvio Rotondo and his wife, Lidia and Claudio and his wife, Teresa, all residing in Italy; his nieces and nephews, Amelio, Marco, Ezio, Romualdo, Rolando, Christine, Christopher, Carolynn and Charles and many cousins.
He was also a brother of the late Antonio DiNitto and Alida Rotondo; brother-in-law of the late Pina DiNitto and uncle of the late Paolo DiNitto.
Italo's family is particularly grateful to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Intensive Care Unit of Newton-Wellesley Hospital for the exceptional care and compassion shown to him during his most recent illness.
Family and friends will honor and remember Italo's life by gathering for his Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2017 in Saint Julia's Church, 374 Boston Post Road, Weston.
