James R. Fitzgerald

Mr. James R. Fitzgerald Sr., of Waltham, died Tuesday, April 10, 2018 in Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. He was 96.

Jim was born on November 17, 1921 in Waltham a son of the late Robert M. and Irene (Maguire) Fitzgerald. A graduate of Waltham High School he honorably served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II.

For over thirty-one years Jim served as a firefighter for the City of Waltham at the Lexington Street station before retiring in 1979.

Jim and Kay would make annual pilgrimages with their Airstream RV in tow to Melbourne, Florida from October to May. He always had a project at hand and could be seen working around his house and tending to his gardens and yard. He kept active and would take daily walks throughout his neighborhood. He enjoyed the early bird specials for dinner around Waltham and beyond and a ride to Kimball's to satisfy his sweet tooth. Jim was always inquisitive with genuine interest in the lives of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His wife, Katherine B. (Hickey) Fitzgerald died March 4, 2003 and his son, James R. Fitzgerald Jr. died December 10, 2011 and his grandson's wife, Sandra J. (Luskin) Fitzgerald died April 16, 2016. He is also predeceased by his five siblings, John, Edward, Robert and Patrick Fitzgerald and Helen Hawe.

He leaves his sons, Robert M. Fitzgerald and his wife, Cheryl of Waltham and Neil D. Fitzgerald and his partner, Darlene of the Bronx, New York; his daughter-in-law, Janet J. (Sienczyk) Fitzgerald of Sudbury; his grandchildren, Robyn M. Reddick and her husband, Bryant of Shrewsbury and Robert M. Fitzgerald of Waltham; his great-grandchildren, Justin, Ryan and Matthew Fitzgerald, Hannah & Alayna Reddick; also survived by nieces & nephews.

Family and friends will honor and remember Jim's life by gathering for a calling hour at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 14th in Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham followed by his Funeral Mass celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne will be private.
