James C. “Jim” Geary, of Waltham and Melbourne Florida, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at his home in Waltham. He was 81.
Born on April 23, 1943, Jim was the son of the late Charles Andrew and Elizabeth Mary (Muldoon) Geary. He was born and raised in Waltham and a graduate of Waltham High School.
Jim dedicated six years of honorable service in the Massachusetts Army National Guard before being discharged in 1970. He also had a long and successful career in the information technology department at Raytheon, later transitioning into IT consulting until his retirement.
Throughout his life, Jim found great joy in sports. From his early days playing basketball and baseball in school to later participating in the 55+ softball league, he always had a passion for staying active. Above all, golf held a special place in his heart, and he enjoyed playing in various leagues such as the Hackers and Duffers Raytheon Golf League at Wayland Country Club alongside his wife Mary and a group of wonderful friends. In recent years, Jim and Caitlin shared a love of Legos with some masterful creations.
Known for his warm and sociable nature, Jim thrived on team sports and the camaraderie found in his many golf leagues. His time spent in Melbourne Florida was particularly cherished as he loved the community there. However, nothing brought him more happiness than his family and any time spent with his wife, three daughters, and six grandchildren.
Jim leaves his wife of 31 years Mary Nolan Geary; His daughters, Michelle McElhiney (Mike) of Bedford, Deanne Gaudet (Lincoln) of Natick, and Caitlin Geary of Melbourne, Florida; his grandchildren, Jennifer, Brian and Connor Hopkins, and Emily, Ethan and Ella Gaudet; his sister Elizabeth "Betty" Featherstone of Orlando, Florida; his brother Richard Geary of Leominster, and his nieces MaryBeth Featherstone (Charlie) of Orlando, Florida and Kristin Featherstone of Sarasota, Florida.
Jim was predeceased by his first wife Marilyn (Petrino) Geary and his brother-in-law Ret. Cmdr. James Featherstone, USN.
Family and friends will honor and remember Jim’s life by gathering for calling hours in the Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Saturday, August 3rd from 9 to 11 a.m. before leaving in procession to Saint Mary’s Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
