Waltham - Mr. James J. 'Jay' Hardiman, Jr., a longtime resident of Waltham, died Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at his home in Mashpee. He was 74.
James Joseph 'Jay' Hardiman was born January 9, 1947 in Waltham, a son of the late James J., Sr. and Louise (Clancy) Hardiman. He attended Waltham Public Schools and graduated from Newman Prep School in Boston. Jay honorably served in the United States Army as a Medic and was stationed at Fort Polk in Shreveport, Louisiana and at Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio, Texas.
Jay and his older brother, Bob, owned and operated Waltham Central School Transportation Inc. which oversaw the transportation of special needs students throughout Metrowest.
Jay suffered a major heart attack April 1, 2007 and was later the recipient of a heart transplant which afforded him twelve more years. Jay and his wife, Mary remain grateful to the outstanding clinical staff of the Heart Failure Specialty and Transplant Team at the Brigham and Women's Hospital for their expertise and wonderful care, kindness and friendships.
In addition to his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Condon) Hardiman he leaves his siblings, Janet Cahill of Sebastian, Florida, Robert Hardiman (Judith) of Hingham, Patricia Clasby of Ayer, Louise Vanderslice of Osterville and Rita Hardiman of Somerville; his in-laws, Dennis Condon (Joyce) of Alexandria, Virginia Janet Condon of Waltham, James Condon (Katie) of Brownfield, Maine, Matthew Condon of Somerville and Elaine Gill (Kenneth) of W. Newbury and many nieces, nephews and their families.
A Memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 4, 2021 in Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham.
