Waltham - Mr. James P. McHale, of Waltham, died Monday, February 20, 2012 at home surrounded by his family after an illness. He was 74.
Jim was born on July 8, 1937 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania a son of the late Harry R. and Eleanor P. (McSweeney) McHale. His family moved to Atlantic City when Jim was 9 and he graduated from Holy Spirit High School.
He served in the United States Army and transferred to the United States Air Force. Jim enrolled in IBM Training School in Kingston, New York. While in Kingston in 1961 he met Marie Alecca. They were married in April 1962 at St. Mary's Church in Kingston. Life in the military brought Jim and Marie and their growing family to different parts of the country including Mississippi, Colorado, New York and a time in the Philippines. After 22 years he retired from the Air Force and took a position with Digital Equipment Corporation as a computer instructor where he worked over 15 years before retiring in 1994.
Jim was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Bishop Gunn Council No. 1583 in Gulfport, Mississippi and the P.F.C. John M. Sullivan, USMC V.F.W. Post No. 10334 in Waltham. Described as talented and handy, Jim loving working with wood and would create scrollwork and yard art. He also loved and collected lighthouses and was a proud United States military veteran. In the end what Jim treasured most was time spent with family and watching his grandchildren grow.
He was predeceased by his brother, Robert McHale.
In addition to his wife of 50 years, Marie, he leaves his childen, Joyce M. Goshdigian and her husband, Danny, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Keith J. McHale of Coventry, Connecticut and Sherry L. Kinnucane and her husband, Bill, of Hudson; his grandchildren, James and Deanna Goshdigian, Erin, Mark and Brian Kinnucane; his siblings, Joseph McHale of New Jersey, Thomas McHale of Lynnfield, New Jersey, Henry "Bud" McHale of Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, Eleanor "Bonnie" Hewitt of Pleasantville, New Jersey and John McHale of Texas and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Jim's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Thursday, February 23rd from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 8 a.m. on Friday morning before leaving in procession Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
