Boston - Mr. James R. Murphy, III, of Boston died Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was 58.
Jim was born in Waltham on June 3, 1958, a son of the late James R., Jr. and Marjorie A. (Noonan) Murphy. He was a 1976 graduate of Waltham High School and attended Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire and Boston State College. He lived most of his life in Waltham and in Vineyard Haven on Martha's Vineyard before moving to Boston.
A natural at computer sciences since college he was the founder of Vineyardsoft, a computer software firm specializing in knowledge based business activity monitoring.
Jim was also a natural born sailor, a fan of Ernest Hemingway, and when not sailing a wooden sloop would settle for a power boat. He loved Boston's professional sports teams and escaping New England winters by traveling to Saint John in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
He leaves his children, Jason N. Murphy of Phoenix, Arizona and Jennifer B. Murphy (fiance, Bobby Picardo) of Washington, D.C.; his twin sister, Mary Jo Murphy (friend, Ernest Silva, Jr.) of Pompano Beach, Florida; his brother, Michael E. Murphy (wife, Linda) of Middleboro; his fiancee, Tracy Brodd of Boston; his step-mother, Mary A. Murphy of Rockledge, Florida; mother of his children, Susan B. Mercer, and his favorite canine companion, Tessie.
