Waltham – Mr. James J. Slamin, Jr. of Waltham died Wednesday, December 15, 2010 in the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington. He was 96. Jim was born in Newton on January 17, 1914, a son of the late James J. and Mary (McSorley) Slamin.
A graduate of Waltham High School, he also attended Northeastern University as well as Boston University.
He was employed by The New England Telephone Company before he served as a Captain in the United States Army with the 835 Signal Service Battalion during World War Two. Jim was in New Delhi, India, for three and a half years where he met and married his wife, Claudine D. (Michell) Slamin.
He rejoined the telephone company after his discharge.
Jim stayed in the Army Reserve and was recalled to serve in the Korean War with the Signal Intelligence Division and was awarded the Bronze Star.
He returned again to work for The New England Telephone Company, and was employed there for thirty-five years as a switching systems supervisor until he retired in 1976.
Jim was a Past Commander of the American Legion Post 156 in Waltham and marched in the Legion Band for many years under the leadership of his late sister, Dorothy Slamin Hill.
In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his daughter, Patricia M. Slamin and her husband, Ernest Kemery, of Wilmington and his step granddaughter, Elizabeth Lewis of Hingham.
He was also the brother in law of the late Joseph F. Hill.
Family and friends will honor and remember Jim’s life by gathering at 10 am on Saturday in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street, (Route 20), Waltham where his Funeral Service will be held at 11 am. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
