Waltham – Mr. James N. St. Germain, of Waltham, died Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He was 94.
Jim was born in Waltham on February 14, 1917, a son of the late Arthur and Melana (Martin) St. Germain, and had been a lifelong resident. He was a 1935 graduate of the Waltham Trade School.
In 1941 he was drafted into the United States Army before the start of the World War II and served for almost five years with the 30th Infantry Division. Jim's unit went ashore at Normandy, France in June of 1944 and fought their way to central Germany by the spring of 1945. In between Jim participated in the battles of Northern France, the Rhineland and the Ardennes, known more infamously as the 'Battle of the Bulge' during the harsh winter of 1944-45. He was awarded the Bronze Star for gallantry in action during December of 1944.
Until his retirement he worked for almost thirty years as a security guard for the Raytheon Company in Bedford. Jim and his wife of sixty-one years, Eleanor A. (Torpey) St. Germain, who died in August, 2009, were longtime members of the Waltham Dance Club. They also spent many enjoyable summers with their family at their home in Wells Beach, Maine.
Jim leaves his daughters, Joanne S. Delaney and her husband, Joseph, III, of Milton and Jean M. Lake and her husband, Larry Gianakis, of Leominster; his grandchildren, Jay, Michael and Elizabeth Delaney and Kristen and James Lake; his great-granddaughter, Eva Lobo; his sister, Leona Landon of Canton; his brothers, Raymond St. Germain of Bedford and Albert St. Germain of Grandview, Missouri and several nieces and nephews.
He was also a brother of the late Edgar, Arthur, Paul and Wilfred St. Germain.
Family and friends will honor and remember Jim's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday, September 2nd, from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning before leaving in procession to Corpus Christi Church, 45 Ash Street, Auburndale, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
