James M. Tully

August 16, 1937 — January 20, 2017

Marlborough--James M. Tully, 79, formerly of Framingham, MA passed away peacefully on Friday January 20, 2017, at St. Patrick's Manor in Framingham, following a courageous battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). He handled the adversity of the disease with grace and dignity, never complaining, and retaining the sense of humor for which he was always known. He leaves behind his loving wife of 55 years, Carol (Martin) Tully.

Born in Waltham on August 16, 1937, he was the oldest child of Patrick and Mary (O'Brien) Tully. Raised in Waltham, Jim was a 1955 graduate of St. Mary's High School and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Economics from Boston College in 1959. In high school he was a stand-out athlete in baseball, basketball and his lifelong passion of golf.

Jim and Carol were married in 1961, eventually settling in Framingham where they raised their family.

Jim enjoyed a 30-year career as Contracts Administrator for Thermo Electron in Waltham and was a proud member of the Marlborough Country Club for over 40 years. During that time he won many tournaments including the first Father-Daughter tournament with his daughter Cheryl, and two Mayor's Club Championships. He also won member guest tournaments with his brother Richard and others at various Country Clubs in the region.

A man of strong faith, Jim attended Mass on a regular basis until his illness inhibited his ability to do so.

Jim especially cherished his long-time friends. After retirement, Jim and Carol spent winters at their condominium in the Foxfire golf community in Naples Florida where they made many new friends. He also enjoyed weekly outings with friends from his condominium complex in Marlborough.

He adored his grandchildren and especially reveled in their academic, musical and sports achievements, and enjoyed attending their games and events.

In addition to his wife, Jim leaves his brother Richard P. Tully of Naples, FL, sister, Anne M. Tully of Marlborough MA, four loving daughters and their husbands, Cheryl Tully Stoll and Ed Stoll of Framingham, MA, Christine and Jay Gauthier of Avon, CT, Linda and Martin Thompson of Mansfield, MA and Marybeth and Dan Fagan of Ashland, MA. He also leaves four beloved grandchildren, Kylie Gauthier of New York, NY, Noelle Gauthier of Avon, CT, Michael Thompson of Mansfield, MA, and Christopher Fagan of Ashland, MA.

Family and friends will honor and remember Jim's life by gathering for calling hours on Wednesday January 25, 2017 from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM at the Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street, (Rte. 20), Waltham. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on January 26, 2017 at 11:00 AM at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, 105 Southville Road, Southborough. Burial will follow at Edgell Grove Cemetery, 53 Grove Street, Framingham.
