Nurses dispense comfort, compassion, and caring without even a prescription. Jane DePass was just that kind of nurse to her many patients but also to her family and friends throughout her life.
Her five year battle with breast cancer came to its end on Friday, September 30, 2016 surrounded by her family. She was 66. With certainty Jane received the same care and compassion she so generously gave throughout her long career in nursing.
Born on July 22, 1950 in St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton she was one of eleven children born to Eleanor T. (Hughes) DePass and the late John W. DePass. Growing up in a large Catholic family teaches each child about sacrifice. It means sharing bedrooms, bathrooms, hand-me-down clothing, babysitting so parents might have a night out and a list of other responsibilities. But in the end it also means a lifetime of unconditional love of family who are also friends.
Raised and educated in Waltham she was a graduate of Waltham High School with the class of 1968. She then earned her nursing degree from Boston City Hospital School of Nursing. Jane later earned her Bachelor's degree in nursing from Regis College in Weston and her Master's degree from Emmanuel College in Boston.
Her career began at Waltham Hospital and then for over 20 years she served as administrator for the Waltham Visiting Nurses Association. For the last 10 years she was working at Nizhoni Health in Somerville and was still working at the time of her death.
A lifelong Waltham resident she moved full time to her much loved home on Cape Cod in Sandwich where she could spend countless hours at her favorite beach, 'Town Neck'. Anyone who loves the beach knows it's the place one goes to breathe in the freshness of the sea and breathe out the cares of the day. Jane was afforded many a sunrise on the beach and but perhaps she favored sunset with family and friends and a glass of her favorite wine. It was a good life. Other interests of Jane included traveling, golf and skiing. She was fierce and loyal friend and treasured her close knit group of longtime friends.
In addition to her dad, John, she was predeceased by her siblings, Jack W. and Joseph DePass and Mary E. Tibbetts.
Jane's love lives on in the hearts of her sons, Michael J. Quinn, Jr. and his wife, Tricia of Marlborough, Matthew J. Quinn and his wife, Melissa of Canton and Timothy H. Quinn and his wife, Christine of Attleborough; her mother, Eleanor T.
