Janet L. (Johnston) Chorbajian

December 24, 1942 — December 29, 2019

Janet Johnston Chorbajian passed away December 29th after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Janet grew up in East Orange, NJ, with her parents and sister, Virginia. Janet went to East Orange high school where she was valedictorian of her class and the editor of the high school newspaper. She earned her B.S. degree in mathematics at Douglas/Rutgers University. She spent two years in Togo in the Peace Corps. She was proud of her service, and remembered these years fondly. When she returned, she settled in Waltham, and had her son, Monty.

Janet raised Monty in Waltham, and later in Newton. Janet enjoyed reading, word puzzles, and gardening. Janet loved walking, biking and trips to Maine and Cape Cod among her many adventures.

Janet's successful career in technology spanned many years, beginning at Michigan University, included a long stint at CLSI (Library Automation) and ending at FM Global. Her kindness stood out, even in high-pressure or contentious situations. Her work was always high quality and highly professional.

Janet was diagnosed with Benson's disease (a form of Alzheimers) approximately 17 years ago. Five years ago, she moved to assisted living. Alzheimer's could be characterized as a relentless series of losses, both mental and physical. Janet never lost her sense of humor, her compassion for others, and her grace, even while absorbing these losses. Her resilience and kindness were amazing. Her visitors were always given the royal treatment, making it a joy to spend time with her.

Janet leaves behind her son, Monty, her Sister Ginny and loyal loving friends, Sue Rorke, Susan Sennott and Frank Cash, who made sure she was always in the best place possible during her illness (a heroic task), Janet greatly appreciated Monty's frequent visits, along with her team of Sues and Frank, who visited weekly. Her sister Ginny lives in New Mexico and was able to visit not long ago. Janet also formed a loving relationship with her aid, Ann, who helped her through good and bad days with tender care.

A Celebration of Janet's Life will be held on Saturday, January 11, at 2 p.m. in the Harrington Room at the First Parish Church (50 Church Street, Waltham). In lieu of flowers, Janet has requested that donations go to the Massachusetts Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. Their web address is: https://www.madrc.org/support-us.
