Shrewsbury - Mrs. Gertrude "Jean" (O'Connell) Keaveney, of Shrewsbury, formerly of Marlborough and Waltham, died Saturday, August 17, 2013 in Marlborough Hills Healthcare. She was 88.
Gertrude, lovingly known to family and friends by her middle name, 'Jean' was born November 25, 1924 in Waltham a daughter of the late Joseph and Gertrude (Kennedy) O'Connell. She was raised and educated in Waltham graduating from the former Saint Mary's High School. On August 28, 1948 she married Martin J. Keaveney in Saint Mary's Church and they lived many years in Waltham before moving to Wayland in 1961 to raise their family. In 1989 they moved to Marlborough and to the Southgate Community in Shrewsbury in 2010.
Jean stayed at home to raise her family. She and Martin loved to travel, especially to Ireland. They took many cruises on ships around the world. Proud and true to her heritage she was a lover of all things Irish and belonged to numerous Irish social clubs.
She was predeceased by her siblings, Robert O'Connell, Martin F. O'Connell, Miriam Garry and her son-in-law, Donald Gramazio.
In addition to her husband of 65 years, Martin, she leaves her children, Michael T. Keaveney and his wife, Sharon Tilburg, of Franklin, Jean M. Tierney of Norfolk, Peter M. Keaveney and his wife, Lisa, Mark J. Keaveney and his wife, Linda, all of Maynard, Eileen M. Riethle and her husband, William and Kathleen A. Keaveney, all of Marlborough; her grandchildren, Daniel Keaveney, Meaghan Venuti, Julia Keaveney, Kathleen Tierney, Matthew Tierney, Shannon, Patrick, Ryan and Christine Keaveney; her great-grandchildren, Joseph and Lilli Venuti and Karli Keaveney; her sister, Anne LeBlanc and her husband, Emery, of Waltham; her sister-in-law, Mary O'Connell in California; many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Jean's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, August 21st from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
