Waltham – Mr. Jean T. Saulnier, of Waltham, died Thursday, August 8, 2013, in his home. He was 88.
Jean was born in Meteghan River, Nova Scotia, on January 27, 1925, the youngest of eight children born to the late Semide and Aimee (Aubut) Saulnier. During World War II he served with the Canadian Army and moved to the States shortly thereafter. On July 3, 1954 he married Newton native Patricia A. Nagle at Saint Joseph's Church and the couple settled in Waltham.
He went to work at the Waltham Grinding Wheel Company on Bacon Street where he was a foreman for thirty-eight years and after that he worked as a fireman in the power plant at the Walter E. Fernald School in Waltham until his retirement.
Jean's real passions in life were spending enjoyable times with his family and playing his fiddle. Learning the basics from his father he became an accomplished and self-taught musician and loved trips 'home' to Nova Scotia visiting with family and friends.
He belonged to the French-American Victory Club and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge No. 953, both in Waltham.
In addition to his wife of fifty-nine years, Patricia, he leaves his children, Thomas Saulnier of Waltham, Annette Segien of Acton, Theodore Saulnier of Falmouth and John Saulnier of Billerica; his grandchildren, Christopher Segien, Kaitlyn Saulnier, Holly Umina, Heather Smith, Aidan Lynn; his great-grandchild, Landon Little and many nieces and nephews.
Jean was the brother of the late Rose Doucette, Catherine Saulnier, Madeline d'Entremont, Dennis Saulnier, Henry Saulnier, Josephine Weaver and Alphonse Saulnier.
Family and friends will honor and remember Jean's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Sunday, August 11th, from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Monday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow Newton Cemetery.
