Waltham – Mrs. Joan E. (Cunniffe) Lally, of Waltham, died Monday, September 21, 2009 in the Avery Manor Nursing Home in Needham. She was 78. Joan was born in Waltham on May 18, 1931, a daughter of the late Edward and Harriett (Dodge) Cunniffe and had been a lifelong resident. She was a graduate of Waltham High School and, in her 40's, she graduated from Middlesex Community College. At around the same time she went to flight school and obtained a pilot's license. Her love of travel took her and her family all over the world. She was employed as a central office technician for the New England Telephone Company, now Verizon, in Lexington for eleven years, retiring in 1990. Joan was the wife of the late Raymond T. Lally and is survived by her sisters, Harriett M. Lally of Waltham and Aldia Bushey of Athol and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was also a sister of the late Winifred Stoffel, Edward Cunniffe, Auretta Keane, Charles Cunniffe, and Clare Burke. Family and friends will honor and remember Joan's life by gathering to visit in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Route 20), Waltham, at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, October 3rd, where her funeral service will be held on 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
