Waltham – Mrs. Joan E. (Besso) Wenckus, of Waltham, died Sunday, July 26th in her home. She was 81.
Joan was born in Waltham on December 14, 1933, a daughter of the late Herbert and Mary (Atkinson) Besso, and had been a lifelong resident. She was a graduate of Saint Charles High School in Waltham.
Until her retirement she had worked for a number of years at Mullaney's Pharmacy in Waltham and before that worked for a time at the Wal-Lex on Lexington Street. Joan was a parishioner of Saint Mary's Church in Waltham and enjoyed reading, bowling and decorating her home.
Her husband of fifty years, John J.L. 'Wink' Wenckus, died on September 7, 2004.
She leaves her children, Carol A. Murphy and her husband, Richard, Lynne M. Patten and her husband, Richard, all of Waltham, Lisa A. Maloney and her husband, Terrence, and Daniel P. Wenckus, all of Framingham; her grandchildren, Brian Wenckus, Jen Brown, Melanie Hamill, Richard Patten, Jennifer Klegraefe, Kristen McKinnon, Shawn Patten, James Boudreau, Connor Maloney, Matthew Maloney, Johnna Maloney and Jillian Maloney; her great-grandchildren, Hailey Brown, McKayla Brown and Emma Klegraefe; her brother and sister, Richard Besso and Madeline LeBlanc, both of Waltham and many nieces and nephews.
Joan was also the mother of the late John J. Wenckus and Brian P. Wenckus, mother-in-law of the late Kathleen Wenckus and a sister of the late Dorothy Gordon, Hilda Mullaney, Garrett Besso, Herbert Besso, Laurence Besso, Barbara Besso and Carol King Shaw.
Family and friends will honor and remember Joan's life by gathering to visit on Saturday morning, August 1st from 8:30 until 9:30 a.m. in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
