John Robert Hose

John Robert Hose, passed Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at his home in Waltham, MA. The son of Robert Haven Hose and Anne (Runkle) Hose, he was born in New York City on August 31, 1940. He earned his undergraduate degree from Middlebury College, and his doctorate from Columbia University.

John’s career spanned more than four decades in higher education administration and leadership, including 30 years at Brandeis University as Executive Assistant to the President and Associate Vice President for University Affairs. Though easily recognized by his commanding stature and baritone, it was John’s consummate professionalism that earned him the broad respect of colleagues, faculty members, and students alike. His intellect, objectivity, and discretion—as well as a quiet kindness—made him a trusted and highly sought advisor. Also known informally as ‘the voice of Brandeis,’ John’s distinctive deep voice was a longtime hallmark of the university’s commencement exercises, radio advertisements, and other occasions.  Before his tenure at Brandeis, he held senior roles at City University of New York and the University of New Hampshire.

Outside the office, John’s three favorite pastimes were reading mystery novels, working out with his trainer and friend Scott Molgard, and listening to Elvis sing gospel. However, he was most proud of his children, John D. H. Hose (Max Fulton) and Jessica S. A. Hose (Thomas Witt), and enjoyed spending time with them and his sons-in-law. He was a doting grandfather to his grandchildren Elsie and Heidi Witt and Henry Hose. He also leaves his former wife, Janet Rice-Hose; his sister Judy Kiss and nephews David Hose and Gordon Chupko; he was preceded in death by his sister Barbara Chupko.

Services will be held on Saturday, December 17^th at 11a.m. at Brandeis University, Sherman Function Hall at the  Hassenfeld Conference Center, 415 South Street, Waltham.  

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in memory of Dr. Hose to Brandeis University.
