Mr. John Francis McElligott, Jr. of Nashua, New Hampshire, formerly of Waltham and Arlington, died in his home on March 30, 2013. He was 89 years old.
John was born in Cambridge, on May 24, 1923, a son of the late John and Evelyn (Daley) McElligott. He was a proud veteran and served in the Navy during World War II. Following the Navy, he continued his career in healthcare in the U.S. Public Health Service. During his career he worked as a Radiology Technician for various Massachusetts hospitals including Brockton Hospital, Boston City Hospital, and for over twenty-five years he held leadership positions at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He was a member of the American Legion and the American and Massachusetts Societies of Radiological Technologists.
His greatest joy came from spending time with his family. He enjoyed traveling, whether it was camping or bringing his family to historical places in the United States and Canada. He loved reading stories to his children when they were young. He spent many enjoyable hours playing board games and cards with his family. He was a very kind, loving, generous, and gentle man. He was very spiritual and was deeply devoted to his Catholic faith.
His is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-eight years, Jeanne E. (LeDuc) McElligott; his children, Thomas F. McElligott of Nashua, Susan J. Chicarello and her husband, Robert, of Nashua and Cathleen E. McElligott and her husband, John M. Stewart, of Worcester; his grandchildren, Heather Chicarello and John Francis Stewart and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
John was the father of the late John A. McElligott, grandfather of the late Nicole Chicarello and brother of the late Paul McElligott, Catherine Langlois and James McElligott.
Family and friends will honor and remember John's life of service and love by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham, on Wednesday, April 3rd, from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am. Burial will follow in Saint Paul's Cemetery, Arlington.
