John R. "Jack" Mullen

September 6, 1926 — March 17, 2017

Danvers – Mr. John R. "Jack" Mullen, of Danvers, died Friday, March 17, 2017 at his home following a period of declining health. He was 90.

John was born in Providence, Rhode Island on September 6, 1926 to the late Joseph P. and Katharine A. (Kelley) Mullen and graduated from Classical High School in Providence. After high school he joined the United States Navy and served as a radio operator aboard the USS Dayton and the USS Fechteler during World War II.

After his discharge from the service in 1946 he attended Brown University in Providence and graduated in 1950. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa honor society. After that he was awarded a graduate teaching internship at the University of Connecticut where he earned a Master's degree.

On September 8, 1956 John had his best day when he married Providence native Mary E. Murphy. They enjoyed fifty-two happy years together until Mary's death on September 12, 2008.

Three years after their marriage John and Mary moved to Waltham's Saint Jude Parish where the young couple made many lifelong friends and where they raised their family. Both were involved in every aspect of parish life and after their retirement to South Yarmouth in 1992 they joined Saint Pius X Parish where they were equally active.

John's career was spent working for the United States Army first at the Watertown Arsenal and later at the Natick Laboratories where he was the Director of Civilian Personnel. After moving to the Cape he was a member of Yarmouth's personnel board for several years.

He was a long time member of the Academy for Life Long Learning, served on the council of the Blue Rock Heights Association and was a member of the Bass River and Bayberry Hills golf clubs.

He leaves his children and and their spouses, David E. and Beverly Mullen of Silver Spring, Maryland, Mary Beth and Stephen Hines of Reading and Katharine T. "Kerry" Mullen and Deborah Hardy of Gloucester and his grandchildren, Daniel Mullen and Jesus Sanchez, Christina Mullen, Jeffrey Mullen, Edward Hines and Elizabeth and Brian Kling.

John was a brother of the late Rev. Edward W. Mullen and Joseph T. Mullen.

Family and friends will honor and remember John's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday, March 21st from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Jude Church, 147 Main Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be on Thursday in Chandler Gray Cemetery, West Yarmouth.
