John “Jack” O’Halloran, of Waltham, passed away, Friday October 13, 2023, after a long battle with cancer.
Jack was born on September 24, 1934, a son of the late John F. and Cecilia A. (McNamara) O'Halloran. He was raised in Waltham and resided there for eighty-three of his eighty-nine years. A graduate of St. Mary’s high school and Boston College, Jack was a standout basketball player.
After service in the U.S. Army 8th Infantry division, he worked for 35 years as an industrial engineer at Raytheon. At the age of 59 he began his second and favorite career as a high school sports official and commissioner. He refereed basketball, football and baseball at the highest levels including a number of football championship games. He added a third career from 2012-2018 as he worked in gameday operations at Fenway Park for his beloved Red Sox.
Jack was universally known for his kindness, good humor, keen wit and encyclopedic recollections of the minutiae of Boston sports history. He will be missed terribly.
In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his brother Jim O’Halloran.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 48 years Ann and his adoring son Tim O’Halloran (Rachel); his nephews Chris Belanger, Michael O’Halloran (Mary), Brian O’Halloran (Jean) and niece Joy Maidrand (Craig). Additionally, great-uncle to Sean, Abby, Sam, Joy, Desmond and Molly O’Halloran, Lexie Belanger and Zachary and Zoey Maidrand.
Family and friends will honor and remember Jack's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Thursday, October 19th from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Friday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary’s Church, 133 School St, Waltham, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne will be held privately at a later date.
